product description

arranged for viola da gamba by Paolo Pandolfo. Pandolfo’s viola da gamba transcriptions of Bach’s Cello Suites have been legendary since the great success of his CD on Glossa (GCD P30405). On the one hand, this arrangement is “100 %” gambistic and, on the other hand, largely reveals Bach’s hidden polyphony. The edition imitates the musical notation of the Marais manuscript, a wonderful combination of elegance and practical rationality that calligrapher Mauro Zennaro impressively attained with painstaking craftsmanship. The result is a unique edition with an appendix in which the six sarabandes are exemplarily embellished, which in turn is interesting also for cellists. (102 pages)

„This beautiful edition of the Bach Suites transcribed for viola da gamba is much awaited and has the potential to become  a cornerstone of the repertoire. Personally, I felt very ‘at home’ playing from the Marais font and love the marriage of Bach in this stlyle.“ THE VIOLA DA GAMBA SOCIETY OF GREAT BRITAIN, NEWSLETTER Autum 2017

„Pandolfo has done a great service for the viol world: although many of us have tried to make our own transcriptions of the suites, it is wonderful to have all of them in one place.“ THE VdGSA NEWS (USA) 24/2017
