product description
for violoncello with accompaniment by a second violoncello, Urtext edition by Leonore and Günter von Zadow. Bréval published a total of eighteen cello sonatas. Opus 12 clearly contains the six most technically demanding of these sonatas. It was published in 1783, thus earlier than the two simpler collections, op. 28 and op. 40 (see G172 and G173). Sonata No. 5, op. 12, is well known and is considered particularly beautiful. In the past, it has frequently been published as a sonata for cello and piano. In fact, however, all these works are written for cello with the accompaniment of a second cello, leading us to believe that the composer also had a teacher-pupil situation in mind.
