product description
for cello solo, 2 violins, viola & b. c. (with obligato bassoon), Urtext edition, edited by Markus Möllenbeck with a piano reduction by Ulrich Lüdering. Series Il Violoncello concertato.
The editor has so far published 12 of Vivaldi's cello concertos in critical editions: RV 398 (in C), 401 (in c), 405 (in d), 409 (in e), 410 (in F), 413 (in G), 414 (in G), 417 (in g), 418 (in a), 419 (in a), 424 (in b), 531 (in g for 2 VC)
For a long time, no performance material was available that met source-critical standards.
The present concerto, RV 409, derives its distinctive appeal from the explicit use of a bassoon in the basso continuo. In the first movement, this creates the impression of a double concerto—though it is certainly not one. Overall, Vivaldi departs from the conventional fast–slow–fast movement structure in this work: in the first movement, the melancholic dialogue between the solo cello and the bassoon is repeatedly interrupted by brisk tutti interjections, while in the second movement, brief, almost braking Adagio cadenzas from the tutti punctuate the rapid sixteenth-note passages of the cello, accompanied by drum-like eighth notes in the continuo. This concerto represents a particularly original contribution by Vivaldi to the cello concerto genre.
Range of the solo part: E - b1, medium difficulty
the strings in the set of parts: Solo-2-2-1-2 Bassi
CD recordings by soloists as Christophe Coin, Anner Bylsma, Raphael Wallfisch, Julian Lloyd Webber, Jean Guihen Queyras and others
Score
„Nach wie vor ist der Editionsstandard vorbildlich, der Notensatz ist hervorragend lesbar und Zweifelsfälle der Quelle sind gut dokumentiert. Das neu vorgelegte Konzert in e-Moll ist durch das interessante Wechselspiel zwischen dem vom solistischen Fagott begleiteten Solocello und dem Streichertutti bemerkenswert. ... Vivaldi „at his best“.“ ESTA-NACHRICHTEN, 84/2020
