for cello solo, 2 violins, viola, & b. c., edited by Markus Möllenbeck, piano reduction by Ulrich Lüdering.
Urtext edition, Series Il Violoncello concertato
The editor has so far published 12 of Vivaldi's cello concertos in critical editions: RV 398 (in C), 401 (in c), 405 (in d), 409 (in e), 410 (in F), 413 (in G), 414 (in G), 417 (in g), 418 (in a), 419 (in a), 424 (in b), 531 (in g for 2 Vc).
For a long time, no performance material was available that met source-critical standards.
This concerto is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and demanding among Vivaldi's cello concertos. The technical challenges date back to the late 1720s, when Vivaldi's long-standing work with the orphan girls at the Ospedale clearly bore fruit, allowing highly talented cellists to meet the demanding technical requirements.
The subdued tonality of B minor, combined with almost ethereal passages in which the solo part reaches unprecedented heights—surpassing the accompanying violins and viola—is exemplary of Vivaldi's intention to blend didactic ambitions with artistic expression.
In the second movement—also in the key of B minor—we find one of the most elaborately written upper voices among Vivaldi's cello concertos. Supported only by a continuous eighth-note movement in the basso continuo, Vivaldi employs a rich palette of rhythmic and melodic turns, including, for example, staccato notes under slurs.
The third movement also presents high demands for today's cellists in terms of coordination and agility, especially when switching between strings with both the left and right hands.
Range of the solo part: D - f sharp2, high level of difficulty
the strings in the set of parts: Solo-2-2-1-2 Bassi
CD recordings by soloists as Sol Gabetta, Christophe Coin, Heinrich Schiff, Raphael Wallfisch, Jean-Guihen Queyras and others
