In the petition addressed to Mary ‘Audi nos’ (Hear us) and in the cry for help to Jesus ‘Salva nos’, we encounter two semi-stanzas from the medieval Marian sequence ‘Ave praeclara maris stella’, which were regarded in many places as a signal against the plague at the beginning of the modern era. Orlando, who came from the Walloon city of Mons, was appointed chapel master in Rome (Lateran Basilica) at the age of 21.
