One of the most acclaimed viola da gamba soloists of his time, Dietrich Steffkins was held in particularly high regard by his colleagues, e.g. Constantijn Huygens, Roger North, and John Jenkins. With two exceptions, the sources for our edition are the manuscript Narcissus Marsh Lyra-Viol Book (1666) in Dublin and the manuscript "Goëss A" (Castle Ebenthal near Klagenfurt).
